Obesity Among Pastors:
Fact #1
According to Duke University, as of 2008, obesity rates among North Carolina Methodist Pastors was 39.7%, which was 10.3% higher than non-pastors in the same region.
Fact #3
Recent collection of 47 studies of clergy obesity involving 35,064 individuals found that prevalence estimate of obesity across studies was 34.8%. Obesity prevalence was found to be increasing over time. Compared to national estimates, from 2005 onwards, obesity prevalence was higher than in the US adult population.
Fact #2
Among pastors surveyed, the majority were found to be overweight or obese (93%) with hypertension (68%); half had two or more chronic health conditions, 35% had high cholesterol, 30% arthritis, and 20% diabetes. On average, pastors had a waist circumference that put them at an increased risk for disease.
